Hi!  I am Ms. Ashley Long, and I thoroughly enjoyed my first year as the music teacher at St. John's Elementary.

I am delighted to be sharing my love of music with your children.  I received my first B.A. in Music from Mars Hill College in North Carolina.  After which, I spent five years in the restaurant industry, before deciding it was time to come back to music.  I completed my Bachelor of Music Education at Coker College in Hartsville in May 2016.  I student taught at Hartsville Middle School, so elementary was a new adventure for me, but I love it!

I am a classically trained vocalist, and I also play the piano and guitar and dabble in theatre.
In music class, we study units on Steady Beat, the Elements of Music, Staff Reading, Instruments of the Orchestra, World Music, Jazz/Improv/STOMP, and Composition.  These areas are taught through movement such as dance, singing, playing instruments, games, and occasionally worksheets.  I believe that a proper music education can help students in all facets of life.  We learn teamwork, listening skills, and leading skills--among other things--through music.

I also direct the St. John's Singers.

2017-2018 Performances TBA

St. John's Singers

The St. John's Singers are a group of 3rd-5th graders who have shown an interest in singing.  New members will be added at the beginning of the 2017 school year.  We will return int he 2017-2018 school year, as I took a year to get to know all of the students, so new rising 3rd and 4th graders will be notified in August.

All County Elementary Honors Choir

Seventeen fifth graders joined me at the district honors choir in 2016.  I hope to take at least that many in 2017.  Information will be announced in the fall.
