Ms. Long, Music

Hello, my name is...
Ms. Ashley Lo

Ms. Long

Hi!  I am Ms. Ashley Long, and I am the new music teacher at St. John's.  I am delighted to be sharing my love of music with your children.  I received my first B.A. in Music from Mars Hill College in North Carolina.  After which, I spent five years in the restaurant industry, before deciding it was time to come back to music.  I completed my Bachelor of Music Education at Coker College in Hartsville this past May.  I student taught at Hartsville Middle School, so elementary is a new adventure for me, but I love it so far!

I am a classically trained vocalist, and I also play the piano and guitar.

I will see your child 5 days a week for a 9 week period.  At this moment my plan for those 9 weeks includes units on Steady Beat, the Elements of Music, Staff Reading, Instruments of the Orchestra, World Music, Jazz/Improv/STOMP, and Composition.  These areas will be taught through movement such as dance, singing, playing instruments, games, and occasionally worksheets.  I believe that a proper music education can help students in all facets of life.  We learn teamwork, listening skills, and leading skills--among other things--through music.

I also direct the St. John's Singers.

The students in 5k, 2nd grade, and 4th grade, will have a chance to perform at one of three Spirit Days.
4th grade will perform on October 28th at 8am and 10am.
2nd grade will perform on December 16th at 8am and 10am.
5k will perform on March 24th at 8am and 10am.

St. John's Singers

The St. John's Singers are a group of 3rd-5th graders who have shown an interest in singing.  I will work with this group at least twice a month between 7:50am and 8:20am.  Third graders have not yet been selected for this year, as I am new, but selections will be made soon.

Our first performance is at Open House, August 22nd at 6pm.  They should arrive at 5:40pm and join me in the music room so we can warm-up.

All County Elementary Honors Choir

Fifth grade students will have a chance to be nominated for the All County Elementary Honors Choir to be held on November 17th at Hartsville Middle School.  The clinician for this event is Mrs. Kim Roberts, the director of the Magnet Choir at HMS.  Students nominated for this honor will receive a letter from the district.  They will also have to spend extra rehearsal time with me to learn the music.
